CONNECTION BETWEEN RAP AND GUN VIOLENCE.
The sudden loss of rapper Takeoff not only shocked the culture, but it also introduced countless opinions. Podcast host Gillie Da Kid expressed his disdain for the need to film and continuously share images from horrid situations. Actor LaKeith Stanfield, of the famed show Atlanta, went as far as to say that anyone who continues to support gangster music is not for the black culture. Sadly, I find a bit of truth in these statements and what’s even scarier is absence of solutions, because the problem is bigger than the music consumed. It all begins with self-love, and a in many impoverished neighborhoods across America, we don’t love ourselves enough to love someone else. These are the same men who make up the world’s most popular and profitable music genre. Our neighborhood disfunction now plays out in front of the world. Sells a lot of records too. These great minds work so hard to get out of poverty only to spend their riches on the eyes of the impoverished. I wonder if money even matters. Some may say its untreated trauma, some may say its lack of resources, but somewhere… somehow, we must adopt a new level of self-pride. Its ok to say, “I love me so much ..I’m not going to kill you.” We (including myself) continue to glorify will continue to manifest. When you listen back to most of the music, artists glorify what later manifests. We are in desperate need of new things to glorify so that new things can manifest.
