As of today it is easy to say hip hop is an eerie and frightening place. What happened to the genre that spoke about struggle and change? Well…money happened, but also status and ego has become more important than the change it set out to make. In a recent interview on the Bootleg Kev Show, rapper Saweetie was asked about the violent climate in the Los Angeles area. Her response not only answered the inquiry but presented a shocking yet convicting opinion. She responded “I mean, L.A. and other cities, it just goes to show that this is the reason why women is running rap and Hip-Hop,” “Because there’s just so much violence and disrespect in the male music.” The statement drew criticism from many male artists responding with all things that make female rap unpleasant. These responses were simply a shot at the messenger because male rap music is indeed extremely violence driven, and more seriously accompanied by many deaths. These are just a few of factors leaving the door open for more fun, sexy rap music. The ladies of the music industry have over delivered on this promise. Never in history have I seen this amount of female rappers in national rotation. I LOVE IT! Earlier this year internet star Shiggy shared a video of himself begging male artists to deliver a hit because we shouldn’t have to sing Munch by Ice Spice for entertainment. Well as the year comes to a close we still haven’t got that hit.
